Can You Build Passive Income From A Blog?

My early premise that a side hustle blog is simply a source of extra money to feed other passive income generators might have needed to be revised. My experience with blogs in the past was based on life experience blogs, Mommy Blogs.

Those types of blogs are based on the blog writer’s personal connections with the reader. They often require updates to move with current events; these lifestyle blogs are fluid and changing.

Now I learned a blog jargon called “Evergreen Content.” Evergreen Content is blog information that will age well and be helpful to the reader for a long time.

Example of Evergreen Content:

How do you change the oil in a 2022 Toyota Camry? Well, the 2022 Toyota Camry might not be around in 50 years, but a good, completed blog explaining in first person how to change the oil might be around for many decades—outliving how information is shared on the web.

Here are very evergreen topics that Benjamin Frankly mentioned about the issues of Death and Taxes. A post on the immorality of income taxes created today will have a long life ahead.

Just for comparison, here is a Non-Evergreen Topic:

How to change the batteries in your Tamagotchi. Sure Tamagochis are still around, but who is searching for the care of those little things? Even if there is any traffic, is it enough to make money?

Hmmm, there may be low competition for Tamagotchi care. I will look into this later.

So Evergreen Content Is Pathway to Blogging Passive Income?

I believe YES, and here’s why.

Although much of my blogging posts are written in hindsight, with a present tense tone, I am writing this post based on my experience today(March 2023), as if I was talking to myself in the past.

I started my most recent blogging adventure for extra income in the Summer of 2021.

Much of my experiences with creating online digital Content were based on experiences from as latest 2009. Right as I gave up producing online Content and went into the medical field.

So I needed a more modern understanding of blogs. If I was doing well in blogs or online digital Content, I might have never gone into the medical field, but that’s a different story.

Here is what I learned, a blog created today, with information that will be relevant going forward, has Evergreen Content. These blog posts will continue to serve the readers for a long time and hopefully generate Passive Income if monetized.

How Much Is Work Needed To Become Passive Income?

There are two steps to creating Evergreen passive income with your blog. Here is my understanding:

1.- Create blog pages with information that will have a long life.

2.- Monetize those blog pages with ‘something’ that will generate income going forward ‘forever’ or a long time. Today’s version of the internet has only been here for a few decades.

So writing today and collecting income for the next few decades is the plan.

Here are some examples of passive income blogs that have mastered this plan.

House plant blogs. Weird as it sounds, no one is changing how to take care of house plants, or house plants have gone extinct, so information written ten years ago is valid today.

From what I heard on some podcasts, some people have made enough to retire from creating house plant blogs.

It makes sense, house plants are monetizable, and people will continue to have them for years.

Is It Realistic To Make Passive Money From A Blog?

I believe it is, so yes.

We have to stop thinking in the current view of the world and think about today as viewed by someone from a few years ago.

What today would a person from the 90s recognize upon sight and has the potential of generating income online?

Going to keep this simple and hope you take some of these ideas and run with them. My quick list of Evergreen Content for a blog:

  • Car Tires
  • Bicycles
  • Dogs(including specific dog breeds)
  • Cats(again, including specific cat breeds)
  • T-bills
  • Air conditioning
  • Lawn care
  • Woodworking
  • Mathematics
  • etc., etc., etc.

I’m sure by now you will get it. What products or services have survived the turn of the century and are monetizable? Take that list, and find items that will continue to exist decades from now.

Will we have hover-cars in 10 years? If not, Car Tire reviews, history, and shopping guides might be passive income for anyone who wants to create a great online blog site about them.

My Blogging Revelation.

Now I hope you take away two things from this post:

1.- Blogging Can Be A Source Of Passive Income from now on.

Write today, and collect money going forward.

I made the mistake of thinking I was striving for extra income from blogging to invest or save to build retirement income. When blogging directly has the possibility of the building continued revenue into retirement and beyond.

2.- What Evergreen Content Is And To Make Money Blogging From It.

I had the wrong idea, and with the examples, I gave above, I hope you start building your passive income empire with blogging. The start-up cost is very low, and the potential is very high!

As we advance…

For the continuity of this blog, GrowingPIGs.com, I plan to recategorize Blogging into its group as a special type of passive income generator.

No longer are blog feeders for PIGs, but for PIGs themselves!

My journey has been long and continues. I hope to have so many PIGs I can stop working at my current job and volunteer as a medical worker overseas.

Still waiting, but getting there. I still am a family man, and while on this Journey of Growing PIGs.
